Here is one open, priced to the cent. On the 13 October 2026 refresh of my price feed, the cheapest Kilowatt Case listing I tracked was $0.08. I add the key, which Valve sells in-game for $2.49, and the open costs $2.57. The case is three percent of that bill and the key is the other ninety-seven. That is the short answer to how much does it cost to open a CS2 case: the price of the case, plus a $2.49 key, every single time, with no bulk discount on either half.

Everything else on this page is that sum, done properly. I run the price feed behind this site, which records the lowest listing for eight cases every few days, so I can price the open for each of them instead of guessing. Below you will find the cost of one open, ten opens and a hundred opens for every case I track, what you should expect to spend before a knife or gloves turns up at Valve's 0.26% rate, why the Steam Market quietly makes every open more expensive, and exactly which parts of the purchase you can sell again afterwards. The latest refresh, dated 17 October 2026, lists the Kilowatt Case at $0.09 and the Chroma 3 Case at $2.90, so you can check how far today's prices have moved from the dated tables.

Bar chart of the cost of one CS2 case open for eight cases, case price plus a $2.49 key, from $2.57 for the Kilowatt Case to $5.49 for the Chroma 3 Case
On six of these eight cases the $2.49 key is at least three-quarters of the cost of an open. Case prices are the 13 October 2026 refresh.Chart: original data visualisation by cs2skinprices.com from its own price feed (lowest listing per case across CSFloat, CS.MONEY, market.csgo and Skinport, 13 October 2026) plus Valve's $2.49 key price.

Every open costs the case plus a $2.49 key that only Valve sells

Every weapon case in CS2 is a locked container. You can hold it, trade it or sell it, but you cannot see what is inside until you unlock it, and unlocking takes a key. The key comes from Valve: you buy it through the in-game store, which charges $2.49 per key in US dollars. That price does not change with the case. The Kilowatt Case and the Chroma 3 Case both need a $2.49 key, even though one case listed for $0.08 and the other for $3.00 on my 13 October refresh.

The key also has to match the case. There is no universal key. Valve names each key after its container, and its own item description is blunt about it: the Chroma 3 Case Key, as listed on the Steam Community Market, carries the line "This key only opens Chroma 3 cases" (read 14 October 2026). So the honest answer to "what key does my CS2 case need" is always the same pattern: a key with your case's name on it. A Fracture Case wants a Fracture Case Key, a Kilowatt Case wants a Kilowatt Case Key, and a key for one will not touch the other.

Put those two facts together and the cost of an open has exactly two parts:

  • The case. Free if it dropped to you in-game, otherwise whatever you pay a seller for it. This is the part that moves with the market.
  • The key. $2.49 from Valve, for the matching case, every time. This is the part that never moves.

That second part sets a hard floor. Even a case you got for free still costs $2.49 to open, and no amount of shopping around lowers it, because there is only one seller. When people ask me how much dollars a case and key costs in CS2, I start with that floor and then add the case. The CS2 cases hub explains how containers and drops work in general; this page stays on the money.

A short note on what I am not covering. All the figures here are in US dollars. The question of what a key costs in another currency, or after a local sales tax, is real (I can see people searching for it in my own Bing data), but I do not have a source for Valve's key prices in other currencies, so I will not print one. Your in-game store shows the price in your own currency before you confirm, and that screen is the number to trust.

The key is most of the bill on six of the eight cases I track

Here is the whole calculator in one table. The case prices are the lowest listing across the venues my feed reads (CSFloat, CS.MONEY, market.csgo and Skinport) at the 13 October 2026 refresh. Each open adds Valve's $2.49 key. Ten and a hundred opens are straight multiples, because neither the key nor a listing gets cheaper when you buy more. The last column is the same case at the most recent refresh, so you can see whether the dated maths still holds.

CaseCase price, 13 Oct 2026Cost of 1 open10 opens100 opensKey's share of each openCase today (17 October 2026)
Kilowatt Case$0.08$2.57$25.70$257.0097%$0.09

Gamma 2 Case$2.64$5.13$51.30$513.0049%$2.56
Chroma 3 Case$3.00$5.49$54.90$549.0045%$2.90

Three things jump out when I read it.

On six of the eight cases, the key is at least three-quarters of what you pay. On the Kilowatt Case it is 97%. If you are comparing cheap cases to save money, the saving is tiny: the gap between the cheapest case on the list and the Dreams & Nightmares Case is $0.71 per open, while the key you pay on top of both is $2.49. Over a hundred opens that gap is $71, against $249 of keys you cannot avoid.

Only the two oldest cases change the picture. The Gamma 2 and Chroma 3 cases are the only ones in my set where the case costs about as much as the key, which roughly doubles the cost of each open compared with the cheap end. A hundred Chroma 3 opens cost $549, a hundred Kilowatt opens $257. If you want to know why those two cases are so much dearer to begin with, the short version is supply, and the long version is on my CS2 case prices page.

Ten opens is never a small purchase. Even on the cheapest case, ten opens cost $25.70, and at that point you have spent $24.90 on keys alone. That is the number I would hold in my head before clicking unlock on a whole stack of free-drop cases: the cases were free, the session was not.

The cases also drift. The Kilowatt Case listed at $0.125 on my 13 September snapshot and $0.08 a month later, according to the site's price history. Moves like that change the case column by a few cents and the total cost of an open by almost nothing, because the key is still $2.49. That is the main practical point of this whole table: for most cases, the price of opening CS2 cases is set by Valve, not by the market.

How much does a knife cost at Valve's 0.26% rate? $989 to $2,114 in opens

Valve's published odds put the gold slot, the knife-or-gloves result, at 0.26% per open. One divided by 0.0026 is about 385, so on average a gold item turns up once in every 385 opens. Multiply 385 by the cost of one open and you get the amount you should expect to spend, on average, for each knife or pair of gloves a case produces. That figure is what I mean by the cost per knife below. It is an average across everyone who opens, not a promise to you: the odds behind it, including why 385 opens is far from a guarantee, are worked through on the CS2 case opening odds page, so I will not repeat them here.

The key on its own makes this number big. 385 keys at $2.49 cost $958.65 before you have bought a single case. Add the cases and the table below follows. The first two columns use my feed's cheapest listing on 13 October 2026. The last two use the cheapest Steam Market listing for each case, which I read from Valve's own Market search on 14 October 2026; I will come back to why those are higher.

CaseCost of 1 open (cheapest venue, 13 Oct)Expected spend per gold (385 opens)Cost of 1 open (Steam Market, 14 Oct)Expected spend per gold, Steam
Kilowatt Case$2.57$989.45$2.63$1,012.55
Revolution Case$2.63$1,014.09$2.72$1,047.20
Recoil Case$2.69$1,035.65$2.79$1,074.15
Fracture Case$2.84$1,093.40$3.06$1,178.10
Fever Case$3.00$1,155.00$3.32$1,278.20
Dreams & Nightmares Case$3.28$1,262.80$3.80$1,463.00
Gamma 2 Case$5.13$1,975.05$6.23$2,398.55
Chroma 3 Case$5.49$2,113.65$6.93$2,668.05

On the cheapest case, the expected spend per gold is just under $990. On the Chroma 3 Case it is $2,113.65 at third-party prices and $2,668.05 if you buy every case on the Steam Market. At third-party prices the gap between the cheapest and the dearest case is $1,124.20 per expected knife, and all of it is the price of the case, because the 385 keys cost the same $958.65 in every row.

To give that a sense of scale, take the Kilowatt Case, whose gold slot Valve lists as "an Exceedingly Rare Kukri Knife" on the case's own Market listing. Kukri knives are already for sale: at the 17 October 2026 refresh, the cheapest Kukri in my feed was a Field-Tested Safari Mesh at $36.52, with a Field-Tested Night Stripe at $42.00 and a Factory New Fade at $139.99. Every one of those is a small fraction of the roughly $989 you should expect to spend opening Kilowatt Cases before a Kukri of any finish appears, and opening does not let you choose the finish. If a Kukri is what you want, my Kukri knife price guide lists every finish with live prices.

I am deliberately not turning this into a profit-or-loss figure. Whether opening pays back depends on what every other item in the case sells for, and that maths, done on a real case, is on are CS2 cases worth opening. This page answers the narrower question people actually type: what does it cost.

Is the Steam Market a dearer place to buy the case?

Most players buy cases where they already have money, which is the Steam Market. On 14 October 2026 I read the cheapest Steam listing for each of my eight cases from Valve's own Market search, and every one of them was higher than the cheapest listing in my feed from the day before:

  • Kilowatt Case: $0.14 on Steam against $0.08 in my feed.
  • Revolution Case: $0.23 against $0.144.
  • Recoil Case: $0.30 against $0.20.
  • Fracture Case: $0.57 against $0.35.
  • Fever Case: $0.83 against $0.51.
  • Dreams & Nightmares Case: $1.31 against $0.79.
  • Gamma 2 Case: $3.74 against $2.64.
  • Chroma 3 Case: $4.44 against $3.00.

Part of that gap is Valve's own fee. The price a buyer sees on the Steam Market already includes it, which I could read straight from Valve's listing data. One live listing for a Chroma 3 Case Key on 14 October 2026 asked the buyer for $21.22. Of that, the seller would receive $18.46, Steam took a $0.92 fee and a further $1.84 went to the Counter-Strike 2 fee, which Valve's data labels a 10% publisher fee. That is $2.76 in fees on a $21.22 sale, or 13% of what the buyer pays. A case sold on the Steam Market carries the same kind of fee in its asking price, and on a case costing a few cents the fee is a large share of the price.

For one open, the difference is small: a Kilowatt Case open costs $2.63 with a Steam-bought case against $2.57 with the cheapest third-party listing. On older cases it is not small. A hundred Chroma 3 opens with Steam-bought cases would cost $693 against $549, and the expected spend per knife climbs by more than $550, as the table above shows.

I am not telling you where to buy. Third-party venues pay out differently, carry their own risks and need their own account, and the trade-offs are laid out on my marketplace comparison. The cost point is simply this: the case price you see depends on where you look, so when you price an open, price it at the venue you will actually use. The key price does not change with the venue, because only Valve sells it.

One warning, because the question comes up. Sites that sell "case openings" for their own coins, or offer cheaper keys, are not Valve, and nothing on this page applies to them. The only key that opens a CS2 case is one bought from Valve in the game.

You can resell the case and the skin, but never the key

Opening a case turns $2.57 to $5.49 of spending into one item. What you can get money back on afterwards is narrower than most people expect, so here is each piece separately.

The case, before you open it: yes. An unopened case is an ordinary tradeable item. Valve's Market data for the Kilowatt Case marks it as marketable, and every case in my feed has live listings. If you change your mind, you can sell it, minus the Market fee if you sell on Steam.

The key: no. A key bought from Valve's in-game store is not tradeable and cannot be listed on the Market. I checked how that looks from outside: on 14 October 2026, a Steam Market search for "Kilowatt Case Key" returned no listings at all. The case keys you can find for sale there, like the Chroma 3 Case Key in the fee example above, are older keys from before Valve's restriction, and they are listed far above $2.49. In practice, once you buy a key the only thing it can do is open its matching case, so buy it at the moment you mean to open, not in advance.

The item you unbox: yes, and that is the only way to recover any of the key. Whatever comes out of the case can be sold on the Steam Market or traded. The catch is that its price is set by the market, not by what you paid for the open, and most results are the 79.92%-likely blue tier. Selling on Steam then takes the same fee as above, so the seller gets about 87% of the price the buyer pays. My guide to selling CS2 skins covers the step-by-step.

The money from a Steam sale: Steam Wallet only. Proceeds from a Steam Market sale go to your Steam Wallet, not your bank account. You can spend that balance on more keys or games, but it is not cash.

So when you add up the cost of opening CS2 cases, treat the key as spent the moment you buy it. The case is recoverable until you open it. The item is recoverable at market price, minus fees. That is why I tell anyone who wants one particular skin to price the skin itself first: our CS2 skin prices tracker shows what it costs to just buy it, and for most skins that number is well below what you would spend chasing it through cases. If you do decide to open, the best CS2 cases to open ranking shows which cases give you the most for the same $2.49 key.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to open a CS2 case?

The case price plus a $2.49 key from Valve. On my 13 October 2026 refresh that came to $2.57 for the cheapest case I track (the Kilowatt Case at $0.08) and $5.49 for the dearest (the Chroma 3 Case at $3.00). A case you got as a free drop still costs $2.49 to open.

How many dollars is a case and key in CS2?

The key is always $2.49 in US dollars. The case depends on which one and where you buy it: at the latest refresh (17 October 2026) the Kilowatt Case listed at $0.09 and the Chroma 3 Case at $2.90, so one case and key together cost the case price plus $2.49.

What key does a CS2 case need to open?

The key with the same name as the case. Valve's own description of the Chroma 3 Case Key reads "This key only opens Chroma 3 cases", and every case works the same way. There is no universal key. You buy it from Valve, through the in-game store, at $2.49. Keys bought there cannot be traded or sold on, so anyone offering a discounted key is offering something Valve does not sell.

How much do 8 CS2 keys cost?

8 keys at $2.49 cost $19.92 in US dollars, before any sales tax. I do not have a source for key prices in other currencies such as Canadian dollars, or for local tax, so check the total your in-game store shows before you confirm.

How much does it cost to open 10 or 100 CS2 cases?

Ten opens cost $24.90 in keys plus ten cases. On 13 October 2026 case prices that came to $25.70 on the Kilowatt Case and $54.90 on the Chroma 3 Case. A hundred opens cost $249 in keys plus a hundred cases: $257.00 on the Kilowatt Case, $300.00 on the Fever Case and $549.00 on the Chroma 3 Case.

How much do you spend on average to get a knife from CS2 cases?

At Valve's 0.26% gold rate, a knife or gloves appears about once every 385 opens on average. Using 13 October 2026 prices that is about $989 on the Kilowatt Case and $2,114 on the Chroma 3 Case. It is an average, not a guarantee, and you cannot choose which knife you get.

Can I sell a CS2 key I did not use?

No. Keys bought from Valve's store cannot be traded or listed on the Steam Market. On 14 October 2026 a Market search for "Kilowatt Case Key" returned no listings. You can sell the unopened case, though.
